Copyright Clearance Center and BioOne Partner to Expand Market Reach for Small Science Publishers

DANVERS, Mass., June 1, 2005–Copyright Clearance Center, the world’s premier provider of copyright licensing and compliance solutions, today announced a new strategic partnership with BioOne, a leading online aggregator of bioscience research journals.

The partnership allows independent research publishers to extend their reach into markets they ordinarily may not have the resources to pursue. Publishers that join BioOne are automatically eligible to be included in all of Copyright Clearance Center’s secondary licensing programs.

“We are extremely excited about this new relationship between BioOne and Copyright Clearance Center.” said Heather Joseph, president and chief operating officer of BioOne. She continued, “We believe it is essential for journal publishers to maximize the protection of their intellectual property and to cultivate new sources of income. Further, a proactive effort is needed to reach for the highest possible dissemination of articles for legitimate ‘fair use’. However, many society and other nonprofit publishers lack the resources for administering such efforts and might even be unaware of the programs available to them.”

Edward Colleran, director of publisher relations at Copyright Clearance Center, agreed that publishers have much to gain from this new arrangement. “This partnership gives participating publishers an opportunity to realize the full value of their intellectual property and also enhances BioOne’s services to researchers,” said Colleran.
