OTTAWA, ON, June 30 /PRNewswire/ - Seaway Networks today announced the selection and deployment of its SW5000 Network Content Processor in StreamShield Networks' Content Security Gateway, a new security network infrastructure device for service providers and network operators. The SW5000 is being used to supply high-speed TCP processing and packet-to-stream conversion enabling StreamShield's product to check for multiple threats simultaneously in real time at multi-gigabit rates and then to block those threats before they reach subscribers.

Key Enabling Technology

StreamShield selected Seaway's SW5000 because of its industry-leading TCP processing speed, customizable TCP stack, patented stream switching architecture, easy-to-use application development environment based on the familiar C/C++ GNU tool chain, and fully integrated functionality combining multi-layer processing with transparent proxy and stream management software.

These and other capabilities enabled StreamShield to significantly reduce development time and associated costs as well as support the massive throughput required for real-time multi-application content checking for tens of thousands of subscribers.

Key SW5000 features include patented silicon technology that delivers simultaneous Layer 2-7 processing and industry-first TCP throughput of 5 Gbps (full duplex). The solution also provides unique stream-based processing that allows content analysis by flow rather than packet for maximum speed and security effectiveness, the ability to apply different policies at the individual stream level, and the ability to manage up to 2 million simultaneous TCP connections.

Advanced Content Processing

In the StreamShield application, the Seaway subsystem is configured to feed data flows to StreamShield's StreamScan engine. The StreamShield engine then scans for and blocks viruses, worms, phishing scams, other forms of malware, spam and inappropriate content, according to each subscriber's individual preferences.

For example, StreamShield's Content Security Gateway can monitor over 250,000 Web page requests per second against commercial website classification databases, including SurfControl and the Internet Watch Foundation, and decide to allow or block access depending on each subscriber's individual preferences.

The StreamShield product provides this protection for email as well as real-time Internet applications such as web browsing, file sharing, instant messaging, and for devices ranging from desktop and laptop PCs to mobile phones, gaming devices, and other Internet-connected consumer electronics.

A recently conducted survey sponsored by the Cyber Security Industry Alliance (CSIA) revealed a high level of awareness and concern about the lack of security on the Internet and the potential for identity theft that results from spyware. The survey, conducted by Pineda Consulting, polled 1,003 voters nationwide and found that, regardless of political party, voters feel vulnerable to identity theft, especially when they go online.

Ninety-seven percent of voters believe that identity theft is a "serious problem" and 71 percent believe that new laws are needed to deal with the threat. Voters believe that these new laws should be created at the national level. Sixty percent feel that it is the federal government and not state legislatures that should take the lead in protecting Americans from identity theft, while 61 percent of all voters (64 percent Democrat/ 55 percent Republican) feel that it is the responsibility of the federal government, not market forces, to protect them against identity theft.

When asked what steps they want Congress to take to stem the tide of identity theft, voters, although they express favorable attitudes towards all remedies, prefer stiffer penalties and stronger enforcement over technological solutions or greater disclosure. Many prefer to make spyware a criminal offense punishable by a fine or 2 years in prison.

It is interesting to note that, even as voters clamor for Congressional action, they have very little faith that Congress will act. Only 6 percent of voters believe that Congress nearly or always does what is right when it comes to the Internet. Twenty seven percent believe that Congress gets it right most of the time, while 62 percent believe Congress only rarely or never produces the right solution. Private industry fares worse, however, with only 31 percent of voters believing that industry does what is right as pertains to the internet. (The highest level of trust belongs to groups such as the Better Business Bureau or consumer groups.)

Online Shopping

Privacy concerns and the lack of effective protection and enforcement are making Internet users hesitant to shop or conduct business online. Forty-eight percent of those polled said that they avoid conducting personal business or shopping online due to their concerns about identity theft. Those who describe themselves as Internet experts, however, do express a higher level of confidence in the safety of their online purchases. Sixty three percent feel confident, while only 30 percent avoid making purchases. Among self described novices, that number drops to 27 percent that express confidence versus 65 percent who avoid making purchases.

The results of this poll indicate an unmistakable public attitude. According to Paul Kurtz, executive director of CSIA;

"Clearly voters are concerned about the security of their personal information on the Internet, and that fear is inhibiting the full potential of e-commerce. Keeping the Internet a place where consumers feel confident doing business can only be achieved through a coordinated, comprehensive approach that includes tough punishment through better laws, high security standards from companies, partnership with consumer groups, and protection for consumers nationwide. We must be careful about the public policy course we chart in the next five years as it will have long-term consequences for innovation and economic growth. When legislation is deemed necessary, such as in the case of securing sensitive personal information, Congress should not duplicate requirements already set forth under existing Federal law, but should address 'gaps' in existing law and encourage the adoption of widely accepted cyber security standards."
